Introduction to Sentences (ବାକ୍ୟ ପରିଚୟ)
ଏହି ବିଭାଗରେ, ଆମେ ବାକ୍ୟ କ'ଣ ଏବଂ ଏହା କିପରି ଗଠିତ ହୁଏ ତାହା ବୁଝିବା।
A sentence (ବାକ୍ୟ) is a group of words that expresses a complete idea, feeling, or view. Words must be arranged in a specific order (କ୍ରମ) to make a sentence meaningful. If the words are not in the correct order, the expression becomes unacceptable and meaningless. For example, 'Is Indrani a classical singer?' is a correct sentence, but 'Classical is Indrani a singer' is not. [[3], [6], [7]]
Parts of a Sentence (ବାକ୍ୟର ଅଂଶ)
ବାକ୍ୟର ଦୁଇଟି ମୁଖ୍ୟ ଅଂଶ, ଉଦ୍ଦେଶ୍ୟ (Subject) ଏବଂ ବିଧେୟ (Predicate) ବିଷୟରେ ଜାଣିବା।
Every sentence has two essential parts: the Subject (ଉଦ୍ଦେଶ୍ୟ) and the Predicate (ବିଧେୟ). [[4], [6]]
- The Subject is who or what the sentence is about. Its head-word is usually a noun or a pronoun. [[4]]
- The Predicate tells us something about the subject. Its head-word is always a Verb (କ୍ରିୟା). [[4]]
Examples:
| Subject | Predicate | Verb | | :-------------- | :---------------------------- | :-------- | | Wind | blows. | blows | | She | smiled. | smiled | | Our old neighbour | has a dog. | has | | A little girl | is walking along the road. | is walking |
Word Order (ଶବ୍ଦ କ୍ରମ)
ଶବ୍ଦଗୁଡ଼ିକୁ ସଠିକ୍ କ୍ରମରେ ସଜାଇବା ଗୁରୁତ୍ୱପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ, କାରଣ ଏହା ବାକ୍ୟର ଅର୍ଥ ନିର୍ଧାରଣ କରେ।
The arrangement of words in a sentence is called word order. Correct word order is vital for a sentence to be meaningful. Different types of sentences often follow different word orders. For instance, in a declarative sentence, the subject usually comes before the verb, but in an interrogative sentence, an auxiliary verb might come before the subject. [[3], [7]]
Consider these examples:
Indrani is a classical singer.(Statement: Subject + Verb + Object/Complement)Is Indrani a classical singer?(Question: Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb/Complement)
Incorrect word order, like Singer classical Indrani is a, makes the sentence unintelligible. [[3]]

Worked Example:
Problem: Put the words in the correct order and identify the type of sentence:
he / song / listening / this / is / to / not
Solution:
- Reorder the words: We need a subject, then a verb, and then the rest. The word 'not' suggests a negative statement.
He is not listening to this song.
- Identify the sentence type: This sentence states a fact (or opinion) and ends with a full stop. Therefore, it is a Declarative Sentence. [[3]]
