Introduction to Verbs
ଓଡ଼ିଆ: ଏହି ଅଧ୍ୟାୟରେ ଆମେ କ୍ରିୟାପଦ କ'ଣ ଏବଂ ଏହା ବାକ୍ୟରେ କିପରି କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ କରେ ତାହା ଶିଖିବା। କ୍ରିୟାପଦ ହେଉଛି ଏକ ଗୁରୁତ୍ୱପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ଶବ୍ଦ ଯାହା କୌଣସି କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ, ଘଟଣା କିମ୍ବା ଅବସ୍ଥାକୁ ବର୍ଣ୍ଣନା କରେ।
A verb (କ୍ରିୟାପଦ) is a word that describes an action, an event, or a state of being. It tells us what someone or something does, what happens, or what something is like. Verbs are essential components of sentences, as every complete sentence must contain at least one verb.
Identifying Verbs
ଓଡ଼ିଆ: କ୍ରିୟାପଦଗୁଡ଼ିକୁ ଚିହ୍ନିବା ପାଇଁ, ଆମେ ବାକ୍ୟରେ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ କିମ୍ବା ଅବସ୍ଥାକୁ ବୁଝାଉଥିବା ଶବ୍ଦଗୁଡ଼ିକୁ ଖୋଜିଥାଉ।
Consider the following sentences:
- I went to a vegetarian restaurant.
- The restaurant was very crowded.
- I saw that some of the chairs and tables had been pushed into a corner.
In these sentences, words like went, was, saw, and had been pushed are verbs. They indicate actions (went, saw, had been pushed) or a state of being (was).
Types of Verbs
ଓଡ଼ିଆ: କ୍ରିୟାପଦଗୁଡ଼ିକ ବିଭିନ୍ନ ପ୍ରକାରର ହୋଇପାରେ, ଯେପରିକି କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ କରୁଥିବା, ମାନସିକ ଅବସ୍ଥା କିମ୍ବା ଯୋଗାଯୋଗକୁ ବୁଝାଉଥିବା କ୍ରିୟାପଦ।
Verbs can be categorized based on what they express:
- Activity Verbs (କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ କ୍ରିୟାପଦ): These verbs describe physical actions.
- Examples:
dance,sing,play,smile,run,walk. - Sentence: Sonalika dances well.
- Examples:
- Mental Verbs (ମାନସିକ କ୍ରିୟାପଦ): These verbs describe thoughts, feelings, or perceptions.
- Examples:
think,want,know,love,hear,feel,read,remember,see,suppose,like. - Sentence: I think it is too late.
- Examples:
- Communicative Verbs (ଯୋଗାଯୋଗ କ୍ରିୟାପଦ): These verbs describe acts of communication.
- Examples:
ask,say,call,tell,speak,talk,describe,write,suggest,thank. - Sentence: Manu asked, "How can I complete my tasks?"
- Examples:
- Verbs of Aspect (ଅବସ୍ଥା କ୍ରିୟାପଦ): These verbs describe the beginning, continuation, or end of an action.

Single-Word and Multi-Word Verbs
ଓଡ଼ିଆ: କ୍ରିୟାପଦ ଗୋଟିଏ ଶବ୍ଦର ହୋଇପାରେ କିମ୍ବା ଏକାଧିକ ଶବ୍ଦର ଏକ ଗୋଷ୍ଠୀ ହୋଇପାରେ।
Verbs can appear as a single word or as a group of words, known as a verb group. In a multi-word verb group, there is usually a main verb (ମୁଖ୍ୟ କ୍ରିୟାପଦ) and one or more auxiliary verbs (ସହାୟକ କ୍ରିୟାପଦ).
- Single-word verb: The verb itself is the main verb.
- Example: He is a student. (

- Multi-word verb: Consists of an auxiliary verb followed by a main verb.
- Example: He is studying in our school. (

Auxiliary verbs (be, have, do, can, will, etc.) come before the main verb to help express tense, mood, or voice. For instance, in "We are watching the cricket match," are is an auxiliary verb and watching is the main verb.
Verbs and Tense

Verbs are crucial for expressing tense (କାଳ), which indicates the time of an action or state. English verbs primarily have two tenses: the present tense (ବର୍ତ୍ତମାନ କାଳ) and the past tense (ଅତୀତ କାଳ). For example, the verb go can be goes (present) or went (past). Future time is often expressed using auxiliary verbs like shall or will rather than a single future tense verb form.
