Introduction to Verbs
ଓଡ଼ିଆ: କ୍ରିୟା ହେଉଛି ଏକ ଶବ୍ଦ ଯାହା କିଛି କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ କିମ୍ବା ଅବସ୍ଥା ବିଷୟରେ କହିଥାଏ। ଏହା ବାକ୍ୟର ଏକ ଗୁରୁତ୍ୱପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ଅଂଶ। Verbs (କ୍ରିୟା) are words that describe an action (କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ) or a state of being (ଅବସ୍ଥା). They are essential parts of a sentence, telling us what someone or something does, or what happens. For example, in "The boys are playing football," 'playing' is an action verb, and 'are' helps it. Main Verbs
ଓଡ଼ିଆ: ମୁଖ୍ୟ କ୍ରିୟା ହେଉଛି ବାକ୍ୟର ମୁଖ୍ୟ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ କିମ୍ବା ଅବସ୍ଥାକୁ ବର୍ଣ୍ଣନା କରୁଥିବା କ୍ରିୟା। ଏହା ଏକାକୀ ରହିପାରେ କିମ୍ବା ସହାୟକ କ୍ରିୟା ସହିତ ଆସିପାରେ। A Main Verb (ମୁଖ୍ୟ କ୍ରିୟା), also known as a lexical verb, carries the primary meaning of the action or state in a sentence. It can stand alone as the only verb in a sentence, or it can be the last verb in a multi-word verb group. [[1]]
- Example: "He is a student." (Here, 'is' is the main verb, indicating a state of being.) [[1]]
- Example: "They are playing football." (Here, 'playing' is the main verb, describing the action.) [[1]]
Auxiliary Verbs
ଓଡ଼ିଆ: ସହାୟକ କ୍ରିୟା ମୁଖ୍ୟ କ୍ରିୟାକୁ ସାହାଯ୍ୟ କରେ ଏବଂ ଏହାର ଟେନ୍ସ, ସ୍ୱର କିମ୍ବା ଅନ୍ୟାନ୍ୟ ଅର୍ଥ ପ୍ରକାଶ କରିଥାଏ। ଏହା ସର୍ବଦା ମୁଖ୍ୟ କ୍ରିୟା ପୂର୍ବରୁ ଆସେ। An Auxiliary Verb (ସହାୟକ କ୍ରିୟା), also called a helping verb, comes before the main verb. Its function is to help the main verb by indicating its tense (କାଳ), voice (ସ୍ୱର), or modalities of expression like ability (ସାମର୍ଥ୍ୟ), permission (ଅନୁମତି), compulsion (ବାଧ୍ୟତା), or obligation (କର୍ତ୍ତବ୍ୟ). [[2]] In a multi-word verb, the last verb is the main verb, and the preceding ones are auxiliary verbs. [[1]]
Types of Auxiliary Verbs
ଓଡ଼ିଆ: ସହାୟକ କ୍ରିୟା ଦୁଇ ପ୍ରକାରର: ପ୍ରାଥମିକ ସହାୟକ କ୍ରିୟା (Primary Auxiliaries) ଏବଂ ମୋଡାଲ୍ ସହାୟକ କ୍ରିୟା (Modal Auxiliaries)। Auxiliary verbs are broadly categorized into two types: Primary Auxiliaries and Modal Auxiliaries. [[2]]
Primary Auxiliaries
ଓଡ଼ିଆ: ପ୍ରାଥମିକ ସହାୟକ କ୍ରିୟାଗୁଡ଼ିକ ହେଉଛି 'be', 'have', ଏବଂ 'do'। ଏଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଟେନ୍ସ ଏବଂ ସ୍ୱର ଦର୍ଶାଇଥାଏ।
The primary auxiliaries are be (am, is, are, was, were), have (has, have, had), and do (does, do, did). [[1]], [[3]]
beverbs: When used as a primary auxiliary, abeverb is usually followed by:- The
-ingform of the next verb to show that the action is in progress (progressive tense). Example: "He is studying in our school." [[1]], [[3]] - The
-en(past participle) form of the next verb to show that the verb is in the passive voice. Example: "The essay is written." [[3]], [[5]]
- The
haveverbs: When used as a primary auxiliary, ahaveverb is usually followed by the-en(past participle) form of the next verb in order to suggest the completion of an action (perfect tense). Example: "My brother has never ridden a bicycle." [[1]], [[3]]doverbs: When used as a primary auxiliary, adoverb is typically used for forming negative or interrogative sentences. Example: "You do not do your homework regularly." [[1]], [[3]]
Important Note: be, have, and do can also function as main verbs when they are the only verb in the sentence. [[1]], [[4]]
- Main Verb: "He is a student."
- Auxiliary Verb: "He is studying."
Modal Auxiliaries
ଓଡ଼ିଆ: ମୋଡାଲ୍ ସହାୟକ କ୍ରିୟାଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଆବଶ୍ୟକତା, ସମ୍ଭାବନା, ଅନୁମତି ଇତ୍ୟାଦି ଭଳି ଅର୍ଥ ପ୍ରକାଶ କରନ୍ତି। ଏଗୁଡ଼ିକ ସବୁବେଳେ ମୁଖ୍ୟ କ୍ରିୟା ପୂର୍ବରୁ ଆସନ୍ତି ଏବଂ ସେମାନଙ୍କର ରୂପ ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତନ କରନ୍ତି ନାହିଁ। Modal auxiliaries (can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, ought to, used to, need, dare) express meanings like necessity (ଆବଶ୍ୟକତା), obligation (କର୍ତ୍ତବ୍ୟ), advice (ପରାମର୍ଶ), permission (ଅନୁମତି), certainty (ନିଶ୍ଚିତତା), or possibility (ସମ୍ଭାବନା). - They do not change with the number or person of the subject. Example: "He can lift the box." "They can lift the box." [[1]], [[6]]
- They are always followed by the bare infinitive (base form) of the main verb. Example: "You may join us." [[2]], [[6]]
- Two modals cannot go together in a simple sentence. [[6]]
