Introduction to Past Tenses
Time is a continuous flow, but for our convenience, we divide it into the past, present, and future. The Past (ଅତୀତ) is the period of time that has gone by, before 'now' [[1]]. In English, verbs have two main tense forms: the present tense and the past tense [[1]], [[2]]. To express actions, events, or states that occurred in the past, we use various verb forms, primarily the Past Simple, Past Progressive, and Past Perfect tenses [[3]]. Understanding these forms is crucial for clear communication about past events.
Verb Forms
କ୍ରିୟାଗୁଡ଼ିକର ତିନୋଟି ମୁଖ୍ୟ ରୂପ ଅଛି: Present Tense (ମୂଳ ରୂପ), Past Tense, ଏବଂ Past Participle (ତୃତୀୟ ରୂପ)। ଏହି ରୂପଗୁଡ଼ିକ Past Tenses ଗଠନ ପାଇଁ ଜରୁରୀ।
English verbs have three main forms: the Present Tense form (also called the base form), the Past Tense form, and the Past Participle form (or the third form) [[5]].
| Column A (Base/Present) | Column B (Past Tense) | Column C (Past Participle) | | :---------------------- | :-------------------- | :------------------------- | | go | went | gone | | eat | ate | eaten | | study | studied | studied | | take | took | taken |
The Past Simple Tense
Past Simple Tense ଏକ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ ବିଷୟରେ କହିଥାଏ ଯାହା ଅତୀତରେ ଆରମ୍ଭ ହୋଇ ସମାପ୍ତ ହୋଇସାରିଛି। ଏହା ଏକ ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦିଷ୍ଟ ସମୟରେ ହୋଇପାରେ।
Form:
- Affirmative: Subject + Past Tense form of the verb (V2)
- Example: I went to work in time.
- Negative: Subject + did not + Base form of the verb (V1)
- Example: They did not go to work.
- Interrogative: Did + Subject + Base form of the verb (V1)?
- Example: Did he go to work in time? [[4]]
Use: We use the Past Simple tense to talk about an action that began and ended in the past [[4]]. The action might have happened in a moment or over a period of time.
- Example 1: India became free in 1947. (A specific, completed action in the past) [[4]]
- Example 2: The British ruled India for many years. (An action over a period, completed in the past) [[4]]
The Past Progressive Tense
Past Progressive Tense
Form:
- Subject + was/were + Present Participle (V-ing form)
- Example: I was taking my breakfast at 8 am yesterday. [[8]]
Use: We use Past Progressive forms of verbs to talk about an action that was in progress in the past [[8]].
- Action in progress at a specific time:
- Example: Mr. Das was teaching us Geography. [[8]]
- Two actions in progress simultaneously:
- Example: My sister was watching TV while I was reading a book. [[6]]
- An action in progress interrupted by another past action: The ongoing action uses Past Progressive, and the interrupting action uses Past Simple.
- Example: When I was reading the book, somebody knocked at the door. [[6]]
The Past Perfect Tense
Past Perfect Tense ଦୁଇଟି ଅତୀତ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ ମଧ୍ୟରୁ ଯେଉଁଟି ପ୍ରଥମେ ସମାପ୍ତ ହୋଇଥିଲା, ତାହାକୁ ବର୍ଣ୍ଣନା କରିବା ପାଇଁ ବ୍ୟବହୃତ ହୁଏ।
Form:
- Subject + had + Past Participle (V3 form)
- Example: The past perfect form of the verb is had + verb in the third form (had + v-ed / -en). [[7]]
Use: When two actions take place in the past, the earlier action is expressed by the Past Perfect tense of the verb. The other (later) action is expressed by the Past Simple tense form [[7]].
- Example 1: When we reached the station, the train had left. So, we took a bus. (The train leaving happened before we reached the station) [[7]]
- Example 2: The thief had gone when the police arrived. (The thief going happened before the police arrived) [[7]]
Note: If both actions happen at the same time in the past, the Past Simple forms of both verbs are used [[7]].
- Example: When she saw the dark shadow coming towards her, she screamed. (Both actions happened simultaneously) [[7]]
