Adverbs are words that provide additional information about verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They answer questions like 'how?', 'when?', 'where?', or 'how often?' an action takes place [[2]]. An adverbial is a broader term that includes single adverbs, adverb phrases, and prepositional phrases, all functioning to give extra information about the verb [[1]], [[6]].
Form of Adverbs (Adverb ର ଗଠନ)
ଓଡ଼ିଆ: Adverb ଗୁଡ଼ିକ ବିଭିନ୍ନ ଉପାୟରେ ଗଠିତ ହୁଅନ୍ତି। କେତେକର କୌଣସି ବିଶେଷ ରୂପ ନଥାଏ, ଅନ୍ୟଗୁଡ଼ିକ adjective ରେ '-ly' ଯୋଡ଼ି ଗଠିତ ହୁଅନ୍ତି।
Adverbs can take several forms:
- No Special Form: Some adverbs do not have a distinct ending. Examples include soon, always, so, perhaps, never, just, yet, often, very, too, rather [[3]].
- Adding -ly to Adjectives: Most adverbs of manner are formed by adding the suffix '-ly' to an adjective. The meaning is closely related to the original adjective [[3]].
- Adjective: quiet Adverb: quietly (He works quietly.)
- Adjective: slow Adverb: slowly (He works slowly.)
- Adjective: polite Adverb: politely (She behaves politely.)
- Adjectives Ending in -ly: For adjectives that already end in '-ly' (e.g., friendly, silly, lovely), we do not add another '-ly'. Instead, we form an adverbial phrase using "in a + adjective + manner/fashion/way" [[3]].
- Example: She spoke in a friendly way. (Not 'friendlily') [[8]]
- Same Form as Adjectives: Some words can function as both adjectives and adverbs, having the same form. Examples include fast, hard, late, monthly, better, well [[7]].
- Adjective: It is a fast train.
- Adverb: This train goes fast. [[7]]
Position of Adverbs (Adverb
Adverbs do not follow rigid rules regarding their position in a sentence. They can primarily appear in three positions: front, middle, and end [[1]].
1. Front Position (ଆଗ ସ୍ଥାନ)
ଓଡ଼ିଆ: ବାକ୍ୟର ଆରମ୍ଭରେ Adverb ବ୍ୟବହାର କରାଯାଏ, ବିଶେଷ କରି ସମ୍ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ବାକ୍ୟ ଉପରେ ମତାମତ ଦେବା ପାଇଁ କିମ୍ବା ସମୟ ଉପରେ ଗୁରୁତ୍ୱ ଦେବା ପାଇଁ।
Adverbs in the front position usually come at the beginning of the sentence.
- Sentence Adverbs: These adverbs give a viewpoint about the entire sentence and often appear at the beginning [[1]], [[8]].
- Perhaps the man is blind. [[1]]
- Luckily, no one was hurt. [[8]]
- Adverbs of Time: Most adverbs of time can go in the front position [[1]].
- Yesterday I met him in a shop. [[1]]
- Adverbs of Frequency: Some frequency adverbs like usually, sometimes, normally, occasionally can also go in the front position [[1]].
- Usually he comes to office in time. [[1]]
- Adverbs of Manner (for emphasis): An adverb of manner can be placed at the front for special emphasis [[1]].
- Slowly he opened the door. [[1]]
2. Mid Position (ମଝି ସ୍ଥାନ)
ଓଡ଼ିଆ: ମଝି ସ୍ଥାନରେ Adverb ଗୁଡ଼ିକ କ୍ରିୟା ସହିତ ସମ୍ବନ୍ଧିତ ହୋଇ ତିନୋଟି ଭିନ୍ନ ସ୍ଥାନରେ ରହିପାରିବେ।
In the mid position, adverbs can be placed in relation to the verb in a few ways [[1]]:
- After 'be' verbs: If the main verb is a 'be' verb (), the adverb comes immediately after it [[5]].
- They are really hardworking. [[5]]
- She is probably right. [[5]]
- After the first auxiliary: In a verb phrase with two or more parts (e.g., has done, will be finished), the adverb goes after the first auxiliary verb [[5]].
- I have never seen a tiger. [[5]]
- He is always doing something. [[5]]
- Exception: Adverbs of manner and degree go after the second auxiliary.
- I have been patiently waiting for him. [[5]]
- They would have definitely done this. [[5]]
- Before the main verb: If the main verb is not a 'be' verb (simple tense form), the adverb goes immediately before it [[5]].
- I certainly feel better today. [[5]]
- He hardly does his work properly. [[5]]
- I soon realized my mistake. [[5]]
- Adverbs of frequency (always, never, seldom), some sentence adverbs, and a few time adverbs (soon, just) commonly use this position [[5]].
3. End Position (ଶେଷ ସ୍ଥାନ)
ଓଡ଼ିଆ: ବାକ୍ୟର ଶେଷରେ Adverb ଗୁଡ଼ିକ ସାଧାରଣତଃ କ୍ରିୟା କିପରି, କେବେ, କିମ୍ବା କେଉଁଠି ଘଟିଲା ତାହା ବର୍ଣ୍ଣନା କରନ୍ତି।
Adverbs often appear at the end of a sentence.
- Adverbs of Manner: These usually come at the end of a sentence [[7]].
- We walked slowly. [[7]]
- Adverbs of Time: These usually go at the end of a sentence [[7]].
- We go to school at 10 o'clock. [[7]]
- Papu was ill yesterday. [[7]]
- Adverbs of Place: These usually come at the end of a sentence [[4]].
- We sat under a tree. [[4]]
- Mr. Mishra lives upstairs. [[4]]
Worked Example: Consider the sentence: "I opened the door."
- Front Position: Slowly I opened the door. [[1]]
- Mid Position: I slowly opened the door. [[1]]
- End Position: I opened the door slowly. [[1]]
This demonstrates the flexibility of adverb placement, though specific types of adverbs have preferred positions.
